Thirty-Seventh Letter from Mohammad Mahdavifar to the Supreme Leader from Exile

A Three-Option Referendum

Respected Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran,

Mr. Seyyed Ali Khamenei,

After greetings,

You must ask the very people themselves what they want and what they do not want.

You must ask the very people themselves whom they want and whom they do not want.

Right now, as I speak to you, there are several layers of guards between you and the people. You

take money from the people and spend it on these guards. The duty of these guards is

to create a distance between you and the people.

Right now, as I speak to you, there is no distance between me and the people. I inform you from among

the people that these people have long stopped wanting you and the Islamic Republic.

Previously, you had some popularity among certain people, especially the families of martyrs and veterans and religious families. Now, for a while, I see that most of this popularity has turned into hatred.

I tell you that if a real referendum is held in the country, at least ninety percent

of the people will say “no” to you and to the Islamic Republic.

Perhaps you might reply to me, saying if a real referendum is held in the country,

at least ninety percent of the people will say “yes” to me remaining in power.

Well, in this case, who or what should determine whether I am telling the truth or you are telling the truth?

If you think that you can display the large numbers of your supporters and your power to us and to the world by holding marches, you are gravely mistaken because in today’s civilized world, this method of displaying the level of acceptance and popularity is completely obsolete.

Dear Leader;

For many years, you have, at critical times, assembled your supporters with praises and blessings in

the streets to chant slogans in your favor. You then film from various angles and show these films repeatedly on television. But on the opposite side, when your critics and opponents want to gather in the streets to protest your policies, you unleash the Revolutionary Guard, the Basij, and riot forces upon them to be welcomed with bullets, batons, and tear gas!

Is this fair?!

Did Islam teach you these actions?!

Did you learn these actions in the religious seminaries?!

These actions may ease your pains for a short time but they do not bring you lasting and eternal peace.

Mr. Khamenei;

It is in your interest to resolve your issue with us, who critique you.

Our issue with you will be resolved through a referendum and consulting public opinion. Displaying power over us through the Revolutionary Guard, the Ministry of Intelligence, and the judiciary, and showing us claws and teeth and trying to intimidate us with imprisonment and exile, will not make us give up on you. This country is ours. It belongs to our children.

We love our country and want to build it with our own hands. We

want to reclaim our country from you through a referendum. You have ruled for forty years, and indeed, you have the right to rule for another forty years provided that you win in a real referendum with the presence of impartial observers.

We are ready to negotiate with you and all the claimants on what should be put to a referendum.

Now, it is the duty of the elites to set aside the fear of leadership and the Revolutionary Guard and to speak their mind explicitly so that we can summarize the results quickly because the evidence indicates that war and rebellion are at our doorstep, and we have little time.

I present my own suggestion. Others also have the right to present their suggestions.

My suggestion is that the referendum should determine the type of government, and the following options should be put to a public vote:

1) Islamic Republic of Iran with Sharia laws

2) Monarchical Government of Iran (hereditary, father to son) with secular laws

3) Democratic Republic of Iran with secular laws

I await your response. You do not have much time to respond.
